This past weekend, WMBR had the great pleasure of hosting an in-studio performance by the band Shores, who are bringing back early ’90s-style slowcore in a big way (think Codeine and Bedhead and you won’t be far off) while putting their own spin on things too. The set consists of five very softly-played songs, in contrast to the loud performance they put on at Great Scott later that evening. Listen to the tracks below, as well as an interview discussing details about Shores’ upcoming LP and split 12″ with Charles the Osprey.

WMBR is looking for designs to use on fundraising swag.
You know this already: WMBR is a college/community radio station affiliated with MIT. We are a local, non-commercial station, broadcasting at 88.1fm, and online at http://wmbr.org. We are 100% volunteer, with no paid staff. This is rare - even among other local college and public stations. Our only sources of income are listener donations and a small stipend from MIT.
Each November, we host a week-long fundraising drive to replenish our capital budget and keep the station on air for another year. Typically, we offer various premiums — wmbr-branded T-shirts, bumper stickers, etc. — to donors as our way of saying thanks and for them to wear in support of the station.
Each year we choose different designs for these premiums, which is where you come in! We are reaching out to the local artist community for logos or other images. This year is special for us, we’re celebrating 50 years on the air! Because of this, we’re especially looking for designs that highlight the 50th anniversary of WMBR.
While we can’t provide cash payment, any designers whose images we use will receive publicity via on-air mentions and on our website, as well as ample samples of their work on the actual premiums. In addition, you’ll be helping out one of the premiere radio stations in the region.

Mimi and Richard Farina made some of the most exotic music within the ’60s folk scene. In 1965, the Putnam Ave. residents dropped by the studios of WTBS (now WMBR) with electric guitarist Barry Tashian (of Barry & the Remains) for music and talk with DJ Ed Freeman. Richard is on dulcimer. One of Mimi’s two guitars is tuned like a dulcimer. People who’ve read David Hajdu’s “Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina” won’t be surprised that Richard does most of the talking. The explanation for the brief gap in the tape has long been lost. [LINK]
