PATNAUSEAM (MONKEYPOX EDITION): SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD

Was aired on the program: Subject to Change
Sunday, July 24, 2022
12:00pm - 2:00pm

As if you didn't already have enough reason to hate the Eagles. Steve Young's relentlessly-romantic Seven Bridges Road was a last-minute addition to his 1969 debut Rock, Salt & Nails. The song and his career failed to ignite, even after he rerecorded the song and made it the title to his 1972 debut for Reprise. English folkie Iain Matthews (ex-Fairport Convention) recorded the song in Los Angeles with the aid of producer Michael Nesmith (ex-Monkee) and restructured the song for multi-part harmony. Released on 1973's Valley Hi on Elektra, Seven Bridges Road became a cult hit among the Laurel Canyon set. Steve Youn re-recorded the song a third time in 1978 to little notice. Arena country-rockers The Eagles soon took to using Iain's arrangement as backstage pre-show vocal exercise, ultimately performing it on stage. A live cover was released as the final single of the Band's first iteration (reaching #21). Matthews was uncredited for this arrangement. Thanks to the Eagles, Young's bank account was never dry, and Seven Bridges Road became an overused showpiece for talent shows and vocal outfits.
