Originally aired:
Kyu Sakamoto's 1961 song "Sukiyaki" became a worldwide smash over the next few years and morphed into a key R&B slow jam when covered by soul-disco duo A Taste of Honey in 1981. The A Taste of Honey lyric "It's all because of you" is now a hip hop refrain. But the roots of the song are more subversive than a love ditty. Known originally as "Ue o Muite Aruk??," the song arises from frustration with U.S.'s continued military presence in (or occupation of) Japan. For two hours, we'll hear multiple language versions, including different English lyrics, and songs inspired by the A Taste of Honey version.
Location: 88.1 FM
