Rod Argent of the Zombies was the songwriter of "Tell Her No," "She's Not There, and "Time of the Season," all massive hits in the mid-late '60s by a band near the top of the heap of British pop bands, resting comfortably right below the Beatles, the Stones, and the Kinks. The Zombies formed in 1961 in high school, but their "professional" life only lasted from 1964-67 through two albums, an EP, and a bunch of singles (some unheralded but wonderful nonetheless) before they splintered...shortly before "Time of the Season" became a #1 hit in the US. Although they could have reformed to take advantage of this #1 song and expanded their record of excellence, they had already moved on, with Rod Argent founding his namesake band Argent, who over the course of six years and seven LPs displayed a hankering for pop, glam, and prog. Their mighty anthem "Hold Your Head Up" is a rock classic, with "God Gave Rock and Roll To You" (written by fellow songsmith Russ Ballard) a strong follow-up. Rod Argent speaks to us (six months after our interview with his Zombies colleague, singer Colin Blunstone) in advance of recent R&R Hall of Famers the Zombies' appearance at the Cabot in Beverly, MA on Friday, August 23, as well as the Narrows Center of the Arts in Fall River, MA on August 27.
