"Where Did YOU Sleep Last Night?" on WMBR's Subject to Change Program

Popularized for a generation by Nirvana's live version with authorship frequently misattributed to Leadbelly, today's PatNauseum theme focuses on a song known by multiple names: "In the Pines," "Where Did you Sleep Last Night?" "My Girl," "Black Girl" and more. It's purportedly a conflation of three different tales: one about trains, one about the pines, and one about decapitation and intertwined with atmospherics of romantic or sexual violence. We'll explore the centuries old murder ballad with bluegrass, blues, and rock variations.
