Jimmy Carl Black, original drummer and vocalist of Frank Zappa's "Mothers of Invention" and self-proclaimed "Indian of the group", along with avant-garde composer and multi-instrumentalist Eugene Chadbourne, will be joining host Eli Polonsky for a live performance and interview at around 12 noon.
Jimmy Carl Black was born in El Paso of Cheyenne heritage, and made his first recordings with a local Kansas band in 1962. He moved to California in 1964 and formed The Soul Giants. Guitarist Frank Zappa joined shortly thereafter and became leader of the band, which then became the Mothers of Invention, who released their innovative, virtuosic, highly unconventional first album "Freak Out" in 1965.
After the original Mothers disbanded in 1969, Jimmy rejoined Zappa in 1971 to make the movie "200 Motels" with Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, and Flo & Eddie of The Turtles. He has continued to record and tour with various members of the Mothers and many other notable artists for the past four decades.
Eugene Chadbourne fronted the band Shockabilly in the early 1980s, and has recorded and performed worldwide with many luminaries in avant-garde jazz, rock, classical and experimental music since the mid-1970s. Jimmy Carl Black and Eugene Chadbourne will perform together at Johnny D's in Somerville on Tuesday evening August 28.
