Originally aired:
Charlie Savage, reporter for the Boston Globe, won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his series of articles on President Bush and the claim that the president has the authority to disobey Congress whenever they pass laws he doesn't like.
The use of these so-called "signing statements" is not new, but Savage revealed that President Bush used them more than a thousand times; much more than any president in U.S. history. His new book is called Takeover: The Return of the Imperial Presidency and the Subversion of American Democracy. He also appears at the Ford Hall Forum on Oct. 4, 2007.
