Larry Tamblyn, founder of the Standells, just died on March 21, 2025, at age 82. You may have possibly heard the band's classic little garage ditty from 1965 (not a hit until '66), "Dirty Water," which savors the pungency of the water from that era that flowed between Boston and Cambridge. Although they are often mistaken by the riff-raff as being a Boston band, they are from Los Angeles. And yes, Larry was the younger brother to Russ Tamblyn, who played Riff in 1961's "West Side Story" (to me, the only movie musical that matters) and is still hanging in there at age 90.
I just dug out a tape of a show on WMBR in 2014, in which I hosted The Standells as they hung out in the studio. There's plenty of chat and plenty of music, both theirs and other songs they just happened to like. Farewell Mr. Larry Tamblyn.
