While the show host is Old, White & Bland, today's Subject to Change profiles Nina Simone's 1969 uplift anthem, "To Be Young Gifted & Black." Soul Jazz keyboardist Weldon Irvine contributed the lyrics to this iconic uplift anthem: "We must begin to tell our young / There's a world waiting for you." The song earned significant popularity in Jamaica, led by a Bob & Marcia cover from 1970. Aretha Franklin's 1972 cover inspired a number of rap songs and samples, which will be explored as well.
