David Nelson, founding member of psychedelic country-rock band New Riders Of The Purple Sage (NRPS), is scheduled to join host Eli Polonsky for a live telephone interview at approximately 1:30 PM!
NRPS was co-founded in 1969 by Nelson, the late John "Marmaduke" Dawson, and Jerry Garcia, who was seeking an opportunity to play country-styled music on pedal steel guitar in addition to psychedelic rock with the Grateful Dead. They were often the Dead's opening act in the early '70s, and their albums got frequent FM radio airplay. Nelson's association with Garcia goes back to the Bay Area folk scene in 1962, when they had a bluegrass band called "The Wildwood Boys" with future Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.
After touring and recording with NRPS into the early '80s, Nelson joined bluegrass legends in the band "Good Ol' Boys", then reunited again with Garcia in his "Almost Acoustic" band in 1987. David currently tours with with veteran Bay Area musicians in his David Nelson Band, and in 2005 re-formed NRPS with journeyman steel guitarist Buddy Cage, who replaced Garcia when he left to focus on the Dead in 1971. The new NRPS lineup will make their first Boston area appearance Sunday, October 4th at the Regent Theatre in Arlington. Listen for your chance to win tickets!
