"Can you surry/Can you picnic, whoa?" So begins Laura Nyro's 1968 elliptical and joyous ode to, well, not sure exactly. The Fifth Dimension made their cover a title track to their album that same year. It was the first of many hits provided by Nyro, the Bronx prodigy born to a piano tuner and a bookkeeper. A cult singer-songwriter, Nyro experienced considerable success when covered by others. We'll examine two hours of covers, spanning jazz to international to pop.
