Southern soul figure Roy C Hammond passed away September 16 at the age of 81. While a hitmaker on his own - 1965's Shotgun Wedding - the artist known as "Roy C" deserves a plaque in any musical hall of fame for his role in creating "Impeach the President" by The Honeydrippers (not to be confused with Robert Plant's pseudonymous outfit). This 1973 tune written by Roy C advocating for the ejection of Richard Nixon is fun on its own terms. But the opening drum intro is the sample that launched a thousand hits. The website WhoSampled.com lists nearly 900 songs that have sampled "Impeach the President," including several iconic hip hop songs: The Bridge is Over, Eric B Is President, The Bridge is Over, Top Billin', Around the Way Girl, and Rebirth of the Slick. We'll feature some of those on this pre-election Very Special Episode of Subject to Change
