There's little surprise that counting or cumulative songs enchanted children and became cherished carols.
The song Green Grow the Rushes, Oh! (not to be confused with a famed Scottish poem by Robert Burns) is a fine exemplar of this call-and-response number style. Records of the song are back at least to early 18th century, and become part of the folk canon from the early 19th century folk revival (It's also known as "The Twelve Prophets", "The Carol of the Twelve Numbers", "The Teaching Song", "The Dilly Song", or "The Ten Commandments").
The structure and Christmas symbolism of the song share significant amounts with gospel Children Go Where I Send Thee (also known as The "Holy Baby," "Born in Bethlehem". and Children, Go!"). We'll hear two hours of variations of these songs under many different names
