Mack Gordon and Harry Warren's composition, "At Last", for the musical Sun Valley Serenade provided little reason to think the song would become a mandatory wedding dance or an anthem for inauguration of the country's first black president. The original version by Glenn Miller Orchestra has the panache of bland interstitial music used for 1940s dance scenes.
Less than 20 years later, up-and-coming r&b vocalist Etta James transformed the song, courtesy of arranger Riley Hampton.
