Leo Kottke, widely known since 1969 as a singer/songwriter and virtuoso on acoustic 6 and 12-string guitars, will be interviewed live by host Bob Dubrow starting shortly after 12 noon.
Kottke issued his 1969 debut LP, Twelve String Blues, on the tiny Oblivion label. His 1971 major-label debut on Capitol records, Mudlark, positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer; in the liner notes to 1972's 6- and 12-String Guitar, issued on John Fahey's Takoma label, he described his own voice as "geese farts on a muggy day." Still, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol, as records like 1972's Greenhouse and 1973's live My Feet Are Smiling and Ice Water found him branching out with guest musicians and unusual song covers drawing on folk, rock, jazz, and bluegrass, all the while honing his propulsive fingerpicking mastery.
In the 1980's, after several albums on the Chrysalis label, Kottke moved over to the independent Private Music label. The beginning of his tenure there coincided with a serious bout of tendonitus, and subsequently a shift in technique closer to classical guitar performance.
In the recent past, while continuing to release solo works, Leo has collaborated with Phish bassist Mike Gordon on an additional two discs.
Leo performs at the Sanders Theater in Cambridge on Sunday evening, October 26th.
Location: 88.1 FM
